Nen Types Explained: The Six Categories Every Beyond Nen Player Should Know
A beginner-friendly primer on the six Nen categories from Hunter x Hunter — Enhancement, Transmutation, Emission, Conjuration, Manipulation, and Specialization.
Every RPG built on Hunter x Hunter lives or dies by one system: Nen. Before Beyond Nen launches, here is the complete picture of how Nen works in the source material — the foundation almost every HxH game maps its progression onto.
What is Nen?
Nen (念) is the ability to control and amplify one’s own life energy, or aura. In the series, unlocking Nen is what separates ordinary fighters from Hunters — and in any HxH-inspired game, it is the moment your character goes from “person with a weapon” to “person with a build.”
The four fundamental principles
Every Nen user learns four techniques, in order:
- Ten (纏) — containing your aura so it does not leak out. The defensive foundation.
- Zetsu (絶) — suppressing your aura completely. Stealth, and the reason you should never assume a fight is over.
- Ren (練) — projecting and amplifying your aura. Raw offensive and stat power.
- Hatsu (発) — your personal expression of Nen: your actual unique ability. This is where builds are born.
The six Nen categories
Every person has an innate Nen affinity, one of six categories:
| Category | Core idea | Famous example |
|---|---|---|
| Enhancement (強化系) | Strengthen yourself or objects | Gon |
| Transmutation (変化系) | Change your aura’s properties | Killua, Hisoka |
| Emission (放出系) | Separate aura from your body | Leorio |
| Conjuration (具現化系) | Create real objects from aura | Kurapika |
| Manipulation (操作系) | Control objects or living things | Morel |
| Specialization (特質系) | Anything else — unique, rare powers | Kurapika’s Emperor Time |
The hexagon: why affinity matters
The six categories sit on a hexagon, and adjacent categories are easier to learn — an Enhancer can pick up Emission techniques far more easily than Conjuration. Specialization sits at the top of the hexagon, unreachable for most and viable only for certain types. This is why in HxH games, your starting Nen type usually locks or shapes your build path: a ranged Emitter and a melee Enhancer play different games.
What this means for Beyond Nen
Important honesty note: the exact Nen implementation in Beyond Nen has not been confirmed. But every serious HxH game maps its classes and abilities onto these six categories — so on launch day, expect character progression to revolve around them.
When the game goes live on October 4, this page’s game-specific sibling will follow within hours: real in-game Nen type comparisons, build paths, and which categories dominate the early meta. Bookmark both this primer and our codes page, and you will be ahead of 95% of launch-day players.
